Cute and spooky ceramic sculptures of weird creatures by Erika Sanada Posted: 11 Nov 2014 09:00 PM PST Sculptures by Erika Sanada successfully captures the cute and the bizarre within the same figure. The work seems to borrow from the newly borns, even the grown up creatures have been given the fragility and mildness of the new borns. According to Erika the negativity and darkness in her works come from her bitter childhood and anxiety. She was subjected to bullying as a kid which led her to take comfort in fantasy and fiction of horror films to escape from the reality, which eventually heavily inspired her work. She had a dog as a pet given to her by parents to help her with anxiety which prominently features in her artwork. San Francisco based Erika was born in Tokyo and earned her BFA in communication Design from Nihon University College of Art and MFA from Academy of Arts, San Francisco.
