The hill of crosses in Lithuania has around 2,00,00 crosses of various sizes and designs left by the believers. The tradition of leaving crosses on this tiny hill started after the uprising against the Russian Tsar in 1831. 100s of rebels died in the uprising, relatives of the rebels started leaving crosses on the hill in remembrance of the dead because their bodies were never found for a proper burial. The site has remained a major piligrimage site since 100s of years.
During the soviet period when religion was banned the soviets bulldozed the hill twice, but people started placing crosses again. People still place crosses here asking for their wishes to be fulfilled.
